Parallel and Perpendicular Slopes

Two lines are parallel if their slopes are equal and their y-intercepts differ. Two lines are perpendicular if the product of their slopes is −1, equivalently if the slopes are negative reciprocals. The College Board uses these patterns in coordinate-geometry questions and in questions about systems of equations. The fastest test is the negative-reciprocal pattern: 2 and −1/2, or 3/4 and −4/3. Why this band assignment matters
